HOW NOT TO WAIT

You’re going to catch a ton of grief from some of the people in your life anytime you decide to go against the norm. That’s par for the course. But there’s no reason to let other people’s lack of understanding derail your Wait, especially early on when it would be so easy to say, “Okay, just one night isn’t going to hurt anything.”

If you’re a woman new to The Wait, there are definitely some things you might want to avoid:

• Communication from drama-prone girlfriends. Sisters-in-arms can turn toxic if they think you’re making the choice they should be making but can’t. Or maybe your mom is pressuring you about marriage or motherhood. She’ll fret, lecture, and try to get you back in the pool. Spare yourself (and preserve your friendship) and steer clear of them for a bit.

• Exes. Do we really have to explain why this is a bad idea? If you’re trying to build a new, healthy life, the last thing you need is someone who has the potential to take you back into the very bad habits you’re trying to break.
